Contatti
In the chapel of the Fort of Bard, you can admire a majestic nativity scene covering 80 square meters, depicting a typical Provençal village from the 9th century, with over 250 handcrafted statues. This exhibit, curated by the Association des Amis du Salon International des Santonniers of Arles, includes detailed reproductions of a town hall, post office, school, and the Major Church of Arles.
The figurines, known as Santoun (meaning “Little Saint”), are crafted using an ancient technique. Artisans called Santonniers first sculpt each clay figure, then repeatedly dry the mold with plaster casts, and finally paint and dress them using specialized tempera paints.
In addition to the nativity, the figures portray traditional occupations of Provence. Alongside scenes of daily life, some local customs are represented, such as the gypsy pilgrimage to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and the Provence Market.
