History and traditions along the Via Francigena

Barely touched by mass tourism, the Great Saint Bernard valley, the Valpelline and the Ollomont valley offer evocative panoramas and authentic examples of local traditions. In summer the Great Saint Bernard Pass constitutes a historic passage towards Switzerland as an alternative to the tunnel. From here the Via Francigena, a historic pilgrimage route towards Rome, enters the Aosta Valley.

In its final part, Valpelline offers the spectacle of the lake of Place Moulin, whose enormous dam is an important work for the production of hydroelectric energy, but also the opportunity for a quiet walk on the path that runs alongside it.

The Ollomont valley is a small jewel suspended over the central valley surrounded by a superb chain of peaks.

This is also the tourist area where the colorful Coumba Freida carnivals take place: all the municipalities, with more or less important variations, have similar masks.
