The Gran Paradiso, a 4,000 m mountain, made in Italy
Never has a name been so spot on. The Gran Paradiso, the keeper of the national park by the same name, is a true spectacle of nature and it is the only 4,000 m mountain entirely situated on Italian land.
The conquest of the summit
One of the classic starting points to reach the summit of the Gran Paradiso (4061 meters) is the Vittorio Emanuele II mountain hut, reachable along a path from Pont, in Valsavarenche. Ideal summit for the approach to mountaineering, it is reachable by an easy but exposed passage. Rely on the mountain guides to enjoy this exciting experience.
The National Park of Gran Paradiso
The areas from which you can admire the Gran Paradiso massif are the Valsavarenche and the Valnontey (Cogne), but a side of the Rhêmes valley belongs also to the protected area, famous for its alpine fauna.
Once a hunting reserve of the House of Savoy, the Gran Paradiso national park was the first park to be established in Italy, in 1922, to prevent the extinction of the ibex. In every season, it is a privilege to walk along the paths of the Park and contemplate its extraordinary nature.
The tourist area of Gran Paradiso
The tourist area of Gran Paradiso, larger than the Park area, groups four valleys that develop from the central valley in a southerly direction: the Valgrisenche, the Rhêmes valley, the Valsavarenche and the Cogne valley. The area is completed by the slopes from Saint-Pierre to Saint-Nicolas and up to 3,000 metres of Mount Fallère and the Vertosan valley.
In this territory, also known for its enchanting lakes and waterfalls, there are also other particularly suggestive mountains such as the Grivola, praised by the poet Carducci, the Ciarforon, the Grande Sassière and the Granta Parey.
