The artisan tradition of the Aosta Valley speaks the language of wood and stone, wicker, lace and fabrics, leather and wrought iron.
In the past, the artisanal creation of everyday tools was a constant in the rural society of the Aosta Valley. Especially during the winter, when work in the countryside was limited, work tools, household tools, fabrics, toys, etc. were made at home.
Today most of the works of local craftsmanship are produced in wood and are represented by decorative objects: sculptures, turned or carved objects, wicker baskets, etc. The production combines simple works, in a naive or primitive style, with more refined ones, up to true works of art. Many craftsmen carry out this occupation as a hobby but there are also several professionals.
Important fairs are dedicated to craftsmanship and constitute splendid showcases for these skilled creations and opportunities to pass on traditional workmanship.
In Fénis the Valle d'Aosta craftsmanship museum (MAV) tells the stories and techniques of this ancient knowledge in all its forms.
