Description of the route

The Miage glacier is the largest glacier in Valle d’Aosta covering about 11 square kilometers and over 10 kilometers long. It is a combined valley glacier whose upper part is fan shaped due to the convergence of various minor tributaries. Joining, they form the magnificent ice wall that drops from 2,500 to about 1,800 meters. The top of the glacier is carved by crevices and impressive ice-falls, the part outside the valley, fully covered with morainic material, is divided in three lesser tongues next to the high moraines where small intramoraine lakes and small groups of pine and larch woods are nestled.
