Wicker baskets are produced throughout the Aosta Valley
The vannerie (from the French word van: sieve, basket used to sieve wheat), or wickerwork, can be found in the whole Aosta Valley.
Baskets are mainly made using willow, with or without bark, but old man's beard, wayfaring tree and large crabgrass are also used. In the upper valleys, where these materials are not available, people use hazel, chestnut or oak wood instead, which they cut into thin square or rectangular strips.
