Dedicated to the beauty of gold and its many applications in Japanese art, the exhibition explores Japanese material culture, with artefacts ranging from the mid-15th century to the present day, exploring techniques in which gold plays a leading role. In Japanese tradition, gold is not just a material or a colour, but pure light.
The exhibition features refined lacquered objects, ceramics, fabrics and kimonos illuminated by golden threads, elegant belts, paintings on vertical kakemono scrolls and bronze objects. The exhibition plays with colour contrasts: on the one hand, the simplicity of gold and black, and on the other, the opulence of gold in dialogue with a rich palette of colours.
The exhibition is curated by the iamatologist Roberta Vergagni, with the patronage of the Consulate General of Japan in Milan.
