The winners of the 60th edition of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the most important award dedicated to nature photography promoted by the Natural History Museum, were revealed on Tuesday 8 October in London. This year's competition saw a record number of entries of 59,228 from photographers of all ages and experience levels from 117 countries.
The images were anonymously judged by an international jury of experts on originality, storytelling, technical excellence and ethical practice. Canadian marine conservation photojournalist Shane Gross was awarded 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his image "The Swarm of Life", a magical tale in the underwater world of toad tadpoles. The photograph was captured while snorkeling among mats of lily pads in Cedar Lake on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, making sure not to disturb the thin layers of silt and algae covering the lake bottom. A near-threatened species due to habitat destruction and predators. Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas, a German photographer, won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024 for his close-up image "Life Under Dead Wood", which depicts the fruiting bodies of slime mold and a tiny springtail.
The two Grand Title winners were selected from 18 category winners who showcase the wonder and richness of our planet's biodiversity and, in many cases, also shine a light on the many challenges facing wildlife around the world today.
To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and in line with the Museum's vision of a future in which both people and the planet thrive, the competition introduced the Impact Award for both the Adult and Young Photographer categories.
