Winter in Valle d’Aosta is a continuous celebration. With ski slopes, spa relaxation, and delicious local dishes that captivate both heart and palate, January 2026 offers an unmissable blend of major sports events and traditional festivities.

Snow sports events

For the first time, Courmayeur hosts the Italia Polo Challenge from January 7th to 10th. Against the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc, six international teams will compete on a snow-covered field in a spectacular tournament. Snow polo, both elegant and thrilling, promises to entertain visitors and locals alike.

But there’s more: at the end of January the 43rd edition of the Marcia Gran Paradiso, a 40-kilometer classic-style cross-country skiing race, takes place in the exceptional natural setting of the Gran Paradiso National Park, in Cogne. A 25-kilometer "light" version is also planned, designed for those who want to experience the adrenaline rush of competition in a more accessible format, and a race for children and youth.

Olympic Torch Relay

The light of the Winter Olympic Games and the enthusiasm of the torchbearers shine amid the sporting excitement that characterizes the Aosta Valley, which has earned it the title of "European Region of Sport 2023." On January 12th, 2026, the Olympic Torch will pass through the Aosta Valley, passing through Châtillon, before arriving in Aosta for a celebration in the heart of the city.

Tradition and celebration

In January, Aosta Valley also invites you to experience its rich traditions. Carnival celebrations start early, with the colourful masks of the Coumba-Frèide bringing joy to the villages in the Gran San Bernardo Valley and Valpelline. Key events include Ollomont (January 10th), Bionaz (January 17th), and Valpelline (January 18th).

In Verrès, the Historical Carnival begins on January 10th with the opening ball. At the castle, the new historical figures, Catherine of Challant and Pierre d’Introd, will be introduced during an evening of live music and dancing.

The joyful atmosphere of the Sant’Orso Fair

Then there’s Sant’Orso, the festival of festivals. On January 30th and 31st, Aosta transforms into a massive showcase of craftsmanship, where you can admire over 1,000 years of artisanal tradition. It’s not just a fair; it’s a lively celebration filled with stalls, music, and vibrant energy.

For a more intimate atmosphere, the Sant’Orso Fair in Donnas is ideal. On January 18th, the medieval village hosts a unique event with around 500 artisans displaying their creations. Don’t miss the festivities leading up to the fair: the “Veillà” on Friday and the torchlight procession on Saturday.

In short, January in Aosta Valley is a feast for the senses. With snow, sports, and tradition, there’s something for everyone!
