Sport Itineraries: Gaby

From the car park in front of the town hall of Gaby, near the regional road 44 of the Gressoney Valley, follow the route that runs along the Niel stream and then turn on the right just behind the town hall. Follow the road, first among the houses of the village and then among pastures and broadleaf woods, until you’ll reach the hamlet of Pianatz (where you can leave your car if you don’t want to walk along the paved road). From there, take path no. 7b on the left and follow it until you reach the waterfalls. Along the narrow path that climbs in the middle of the forest you may find some slippery sections.

From Niel (which you can get to following directions from the square in Gaby), follow the path for Col Mologna Grande. You go past the farmhouses of Peiri and Stùbini and then, after going past a stream, take route 6B on the left. Now go up a steep trail, amidst clearings and isolated larch trees, in the direction of the pastures of Jatzit and Cucki. In addition to signposts, two stone figures give directions, first to the pasture of Kiwsülli, and then to Col Lazoney (2395 m)

From Niel (which is reached following the directions from Gaby square) take the mule track that crosses the village of Gruba and head right among the meadows into the woods. After a series of bends you come to a clearing where the path divides. Ignore the branch on the right which leads to Col Chapparelle and continues to the left on the woods, which becomes less dense. Follow the mule track, and after a farmhouse, you come to Col Piccola Mologna (2205 m).
In this past, this was a passage of communication between the valley of Gressoney and the Biella region.

From the residential area of Niel (which can be reached following directions from the square in Gaby), take the mule track that goes up towards the houses in Gruba and before getting there, turn left and get onto the pastures of Péiri and Stùbini. Just beyond this point, follow itinerary 6A and ignoring all other trails, cross two bridges over the stream and go up into the meadows towards the cabins of Stòvela and the pastures of Piccolo Lazoney and Gretie. From here you come to Lac Gretie, and veering right, after a crag you come to Col Mologna Grande. Take the path on the left and go up the crest, where, after 30 minutes or so, you arrive at Punta Tre Vescovi.

In the hamlet of Tzendelabò, in the municipality of Gaby, take route 9, which winds up into the woods. After going past several pastures you come out of the woods near Trusinod pasture. Go through another section of the wood and you come out onto a panoramic grassy terrace and reach Alpe Fontane. A right diagonal takes you to the final section of the valley. A convenient mule track takes you across, dug out of the rock and built in 1877 on the initiative of Senator Federico Rosazza. Col Vecchia stands at 2187 m.
